Why Your New Wolf or Thermador Range Keeps Tripping the Breaker in Older Encino Homes
I get this call at least once a month, usually a week or two after a kitchen remodel wraps up: “We just installed a $9,000 Wolf range and it keeps shutting off / tripping the breaker / throwing error codes.” The homeowner assumes the range is defective. Nine times out of ten, it isn’t. The range is doing exactly what it’s designed to do — the house just can’t feed it.
The Encino wiring reality
I’ve written before about how the water pipes north of Ventura Boulevard, in the tract homes off Hayvenhurst and White Oak, are often still original galvanized from the ’50s and ’60s. The electrical panels in those same houses have a parallel problem. A lot of them were built with 100-amp service, sometimes upgraded to 125 or 150 amp somewhere along the way, but rarely touched since. That was plenty of panel for a builder-grade electric range, a water heater, central air, and a garage full of tools.
It is not enough panel for a modern kitchen. And it’s not just the older tract homes — I see this in hillside remodels too, where a 1970s house south of the Boulevard gets a full kitchen gut but the electrician on the job only pulls new circuits for what’s on the spec sheet at the time, and two years later a homeowner adds a wine fridge or a second oven and suddenly the math doesn’t work anymore.
What these ranges actually draw
A Wolf 48-inch dual-fuel range isn’t just a gas range with an electric cord for the clock. The convection ovens, the self-clean cycle, and especially the electric elements on a dual-fuel or all-electric model pull real amperage — often requiring a dedicated 50-amp, 240-volt circuit on its own breaker, not shared with anything else in the kitchen.
Induction is the bigger issue. A Thermador or Wolf induction cooktop can call for a 40-to-50-amp dedicated circuit by itself, separate from the wall oven. Run four burners at high power simultaneously — which is exactly what happens on a Thanksgiving morning or a big dinner party, the kind of entertaining Encino kitchens are built for — and the draw spikes hard. If the circuit was sized for the old range, or worse, if it’s sharing a circuit with the microwave or a disposal, the breaker does its job and trips.
The symptoms that get blamed on the appliance
Here’s what actually shows up on my service calls:
- Breaker trips mid self-clean cycle. The oven’s cleaning element pulls near its max draw for hours; an undersized circuit or a breaker with thermal fatigue trips well before the cycle finishes.
- Induction elements cut out or throttle down when multiple zones run at once, especially on hot summer days when the AC compressor is also cycling on the same panel.
- Control board resets or blank displays. This one’s sneaky — it’s not always a hard trip. A voltage sag under heavy load can brown out the electronic control board just enough to reset it without popping the breaker at all. Customers describe it as the range “glitching.”
- Repeat control board failures. Chronic voltage sag is genuinely hard on electronics. I’ve replaced the same control board twice on a Thermador before anyone thought to check the circuit with a clamp meter under load. The board wasn’t defective — it was getting cooked by dirty power.
What we check versus what needs an electrician
When you call us for a range that’s misbehaving, the first thing I do is pull the error code history and read the board — Wolf and Thermador boards log fault history, and that tells me whether this looks like a component failure or a power problem. If I put a clamp meter on the circuit during a self-clean cycle or a four-burner induction run and I see the amperage riding right at the breaker’s rating, or I see the voltage sagging under load, that’s not something I fix with a part. That’s an electrician’s job — running a dedicated circuit, upgrading wire gauge, or in some cases upgrading the panel itself.

What a panel upgrade actually runs
In the City of LA/LADWP service area, a straightforward 200-amp panel upgrade with permit typically runs $3,500–$6,500 depending on how much of the existing wiring needs to be brought up to code and whether the meter/service mast also needs replacing. A single new dedicated 50-amp circuit for an existing panel with room to spare is much cheaper, usually $600–$1,200. The expensive scenario is the panel that’s already full — no room for a new breaker — which forces the bigger upgrade.
Before you buy the range
If you’re mid-remodel and shopping for a Wolf or Thermador range, have an electrician confirm panel capacity and circuit sizing before the appliance gets ordered, not after it’s sitting crated in your garage. It’s a five-minute conversation that saves weeks of finger-pointing between the appliance dealer, the electrician, and us.
